YOUR ASSESSMENT OF THE BILLS' DRAFT

Posted on: April 27, 2008 6:08 pm

All right Bills fans.. do you feel we did good in the draft?  Did we oversee glaring needs?  Did we pick the right guys for the right positions?  Sound off!

I would give us a B for this year.  We didn't address all the needs in the correct order, I feel.  But the guys we picked up definitely show a lot of promise.

YOUR ASSESSMENT OF THE BILLS' DRAFT

The Bills did OK on day one. McKelvin will be fine. I hated to miss out on Devin Thomas. Hardy may work out, but I'm not betting my goodies on that. The Chris Ellis instead of Dan Conner pick makes me pretty mad. It doesn't look like Posluszny is an iron man, and Ellison should not be on the field. The rest of day two is all Bobby April, as far as I can see. They messed up with regard to not picking up a project for replacing Melvin Fowler. Considering they were in a good overall position (11th), I don't think much of the draft, maybe a C, unless Hardy proves a lot better than I think. That's how I feel, and I hope I'm wrong. If they had been able to move up for Thomas, I would have been a lot happier.

YOUR ASSESSMENT OF THE BILLS' DRAFT

Hey JD.

What is it with the Bills and undersized cornerbacks?  Well, at least they addressed the need for taller WRs.  How about none in the first round; weird, huh?  Not since 1990 has that happened.

I was a bit miffed that we didn't look for a good center to push Fowler to improve, as well.

We should've gone TE in the 3rd, not  LB.  Poz had one bad injury in a year that didn't really matter anyway.  I think he'll be able to hack a full season.  I think our LB corps is fine; Royal sucks so we should've addressed that earlier on.

I think the biggest factor this year will be Edwards.  He's going to have to grow up awfully fast.  If Losman starts at all this year I think we're toast, unless we lock up a playoff spot late in the year and need to rest guys.  I feel the pieces are in place for success; sure there are holes left to fill over time, but every team has them.

Thanks for the comments, and let's hope for a great year!

YOUR ASSESSMENT OF THE BILLS' DRAFT

Cannot argue hard against you retro.

To me it's all about beating the Patriots. The Bills are nowhere until they beat the Patriots. Lindell is great, but 94-17 isn't going to get it done. A lot depends on Hardy, and as you say how much Edwards progresses. I think Stroud (I pray his ankle is100%), Mitchell and McKelvin will shave off some of those 94 points. Is Hardy going to add a lot to the 17 points? He couldn't hurt, and the Patriots have lost a lot in the defensive backfield. Fowler versus Wilfork is a disaster. These are some of my thoughts.

Good blog. I hope some of the Bills deadbeats will join on.

I totally agree.  Especially since Everett appeared on the Jumbotron trying to inspire the team and the fans before the home game against the Pats, and then we got shellacked 56-10.  With the offseason and draft acquisitions, there is no way that will happen again.

Let's hope our TE Fine is a great pickup, and can erase any concerns at that position.  Center is now definitely our biggest hole, followed by Special Teams (which took a big hit with a number of cuts) and a DT and LDE.  Williams/Jefferson and Denney/Kelsay don't do much for me.  Stroud should help big time.

YOUR ASSESSMENT OF THE BILLS' DRAFT

I really liked our draft this year, but it wasn't as good as last year. Heck, if it is as good as last year, this will be a great draft. I liked how we got McKelvin and I hope we keep him for years instead of what happened to Nate Clements and Antoine Winfield.  He can also do some kickoff returns so Terence McGee can focus on being the number one corner. I loved the James Hardy pick and he is HUGE. Enough said for a wideout. Chris Ellis can be a good pass rusher, and you can never have enough good pass rushers. The later rounds were okay, but we also had some big reaches with Reggie Corner and Derek Fine. I loved the Steve Johnson pick and I think he can be this year's Marques Colston because he shouldn't have gone past round four after leading the SEC in receiving yards and touchdowns... I think.

I'll give the Bills a B on this draft because there were some great people we picked and some reaches, but overall, another solid draft.
