BEST ARCADE SPORTS GAMES

Posted on: February 5, 2008 4:19 pm

Man, I miss the old arcade days.  Now they're pretty much extinct, what with the home systems having amazing graphics, control and sound.  Where's my time machine?

What do you feel was the best sports-themed arcade game?  For me, you have to go back to the days of pizza parlors or arcades in the '80s to enjoy the greatest experience in video sports...

TRACK & FIELD!!!

The game that introduced button-mashing to the masses, and left you in a pool of sweat after each event.  This game was so multi-layered and each event well-detailed that you felt like you were actually on the field competing in each event (100 m dash, long jump, javelin, hammer throw, hurdles, and high jump).

Certainly the NBA JAM series will get mentions by others, or the NFL BLITZ series, or Golden Tee Golf.  But T&F will always be my favorite.  I liked Hyper Sports (the sequel) too, but the original was better.

What are your submissions, people?

BEST ARCADE SPORTS GAMES

Well I played Nfl Blitz once, and it was okay, but for the most part I'm not that into arcade games. I don't go to a lot of arcade places so some of these games I wouldn't know. Although they sound kinda fun.

BEST ARCADE SPORTS GAMES

MRclutch4,

I don't go to arcades anymore like I used to 10+ years ago, simply because they're all about redemption machines anymore (machines that give out tickets).  And hell, I got a PS2 I can fire up anytime, and to satisfy my old-school cravings I got emulators for games that aren't around anymore, like Track & Field.

The sports titles I mentioned are really quite good; you should hunt them down via the internet.  They are all emulated by different programs, so you could google them and add "emulator" to the search and you'll be able to run them on your cpu.  But for Track & Field, button mashing on the keyboard just isn't the same as it was in the arcades (much fatter buttons).  Of course, if you had a lot of money to burn and a lot of space in your home, you could buy an arcade machine of the aforementioned titles.  But you better not live in an upstairs apartment; those suckers are heavy!

BEST ARCADE SPORTS GAMES

man i LOVED track and field.  i kid you not, on the hammer throw, i threw it beyond 100 m and got ripped off of a high score.  everyone used a pen, or comb, or some other method of cheating.  all i did was use my fingers and flutter them away.  the sequel was actually easier, so i'm with you on this that i like the original.  i used to like to kill the bird with the javelin throw.

faves:  punch out, nba jam, arch rivals (a basket brawl), rally gp (easy to cheat on), the original football game with the x's & o's, tubing, alpine skiing, virtua tennis.

BEST ARCADE SPORTS GAMES

Wow kmgonz, you're going waaay back when you mention the football game with the x's and o's (Atari Football).  Punch Out I was never really good at but I could at least get to Kid Qucik.  I liked Toobin' and Alpine Ski (the old one with the point values that you had to run over) but I never really got into the NBA Jam series.

Something I didn't realize until recently was that if you tie with your opponent on 100m or hurdles makes the explorer from the old game "Tutankhamn" appear, giving you 1,000 points.  Shows that not even Konami is above plugging their other merchandise.
