Now, let's move up in the console chain by looking back at the Sega Genesis sports games. What titles did you love or hate among the "Nintendo killer"'s titles? Gotta love that slogan: Sega Does What Nintendon't!

Genesis Sports GamesWell, I'll start by throwing my hat in the ring: I loved the Madden series. In its humble beginnings, it didn't have all the teams (but at least it had the Bills). And it didn't have a regualr season 16-game format. But I fell instantly in love with its A,B,C receiver/te windows when the QB went back to pass. This was really easy to get used to. And the music was pretty awesome, especially the rapping referee. If you haven't played it, I know it sounds silly, but trust me, it was awesome. And the EA Sports NHL series was also impressive, but it wasn't until NHL '96 when I really played it religiously. You got to give them ratings for all the players' stats and got a lot of letter space to name them. So naturally I gave them all obscene or goofy names, and when they scored a point their names would be put up on the screen for the world to see, and for me to crack up at. The evolution of one-timers in the series was a thing of beauty, and the instant replay was used quite often. Many fans might love the NBA Live series but I always have a soft spot for Tecmo NBA Basketball. I could beat every team's ass like no one's business but I loved the controls so much that I didn't care about the lack of challenge. I felt the entire Lakers vs. Celtics/Bulls vs. Blazers/whoever vs. whoever series sucked. Baseball games for the Genesis didn't do much for me. Neither did college basketball games, but Bill Walsh NCAA Football was sweet. Crappiest sports games: Lakers vs. Celtics, Tommy Lasorda Baseball, and that's about it. Either I felt Genesis sports games were generally at least playable, or I just didn't play enough of them to get a clearer picture of what Genesis sports games in general were like. Oh, and I also liked James Buster Douglas boxing, at least a little bit. The graphics were pretty nice for the time. And I LOVED Super Hang-On. That's my 2 cents. |
