NES Sports Games: The Good, Bad and Unplayable

Posted on: January 21, 2008 11:03 pm

I've posted threads about this in the past, but it's time to drag it ouit again, blow on the connections, and pop it in the control deck for another go at it.  What were your favorite, not-so-favorite, and just plain despised NES games you ever played?

I'll start off:

My faves: Tecmo Bowl, Kings of the Beach, Bases Loaded, NES Ice Hockey, Blades Of Steel, Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, Rad Racer, RC Pro-Am, Pro Wrestling, Track & Field II.

Sucked: 10 yard fight, John Elway's Quarterback, American Gladiators.

Can't wait to hear your favorites and dislikes.

NES Sports Games: The Good, Bad and Unplayable

Tecmo Super Bowl was my favorite... that was after Tecmo Bowl, right?  I loved how defenders would just bounce off and go flying about 10 yards when you were running with a big back like Christian Okoye.  Or just play as the Houston Oilers and pass all day, run up the score....

Blades of Steel was also very good, and I can't forget Excite Bike!

NES Sports Games: The Good, Bad and Unplayable

Yeah, Tecmo Super Bowl was a favorite of many NES enthusiasts.  I think the Genesis had just come out and I was playing the first incarnation of the Madden series at that point, so I missed the Tecmo Super Bowl bandwagon.  Watching the defenders bounce off the top running backs like they were popcorn was pretty entertaining.

It was fun trying to beat the mini-game with the Gradius enemy ship at the end of a period in Blades Of Steel.

Excitebike was kinda fun, but had some of the goofiest music (still sticks in my head, though).

NES Sports Games: The Good, Bad and Unplayable

The ones we used to have battles on were Tecmo Bowl, Tecmo Super Bowl, RBI Baseball, MLB Baseball, and Double Dribble.  Tecmo Superbowl had to be my favorite though.  The part I liked most about it was that it actually kept up with your stats throughout a season.  Nothing like leading the league in rushing with Borry Sanders having over 7,000 yards rushing!!
